To Bruce: About availability, I have written a <a href="http://javacard.vetilles.com/2008/09/17/java-card-3-products/" rel="nofollow">post</a> as an answer.

About the price, I can't tell for many reasons, including "I don't know", and "I am not allowed to disclose this information". What I can tell is that the hardware chip could be around twice as expensive as a typical smart card. But the price of a smart card also includes software-related costs, production-related costs, and I don't know anything about these.

Do you know when Gemalto plans to release their Java Card 3 cards? You mentioned that Java Card 3 card are expensive -- how expensive is "expensive"?

Thanks,
