Entertaining BOF

Among the Java Card speakers, the most colorful and refreshing was undoubtedly Seth Meltzer, from the IRS (yes, the Internal Revenue Service, i.e., the US tax guys). Seth Meltzer is in fact a teacher and researcher, and his specialty is more cryptography than smart cards.

His presentation was also very much oriented toward cryptography, with a very nice introduction; he is definitely the kind of teacher that I loved while studying.

The slides that he presented this year are quite close from the ones that he showed last year in a technical session. Quite unusual at JavaOne. And if you like them, then you should check HxMEL.com, where you can download his cryptography book for free. You can also get the real thing, for instance from Amazon.

Last but not least, Seth is a firm smart card believer, and he built an electronic purse system for the IRS, which was never deployed. Let’s hope that we can get him interested in Bandol and the next generation of Java Card.
