It seems that things are moving a bit these days. Java Card experts and salespeople have been talking about deploying applications from several issuers on a single card. Last year, I made a desperate call at JavaOne, talking about white card schemes, even though I was starting to get tired of not going anywhere.
But things are starting to happen in this direction: operators are talking with banks and transport operators, there are over one hundred NFC pilots, most of them with multiple applications, more companies display interest in Java Card applications than ever, and many more things. So, hopefully, there will be quite a few things happening on traditional card applications, and our 10 years of desert preaching will end up being useful.
Things are also moving in other directions. This year in JavaOne, Java Card talks will mostly be on the Bandol version of Java Card. There will be only two technical sessions, all about the future: a rather conventional one by myself and Sun’s Saqib Ahmad and Florian Tournier, and a hopefully more innovative one by Gemalto’s Jean-Jacques Vandewalle and Laurent Lagosanto. There will also be an entertaining BOF by Seth Meltzer and Doris Baker, on their experience with Java Card in government.
